Doppleganger III, performance, 20 '00, 2019
Color prints on cardboard, light set, multi-channel screening.
With Katia Kotelskaya and Luca Rossi.
Doppleganger III explores the ways in which language is operated by algorithms and how the experience of the user could and should engage with political questions arising from the development of artificial intelligence.
Three characters, one camera, two temporalities, four backdrops and ongoing soundtracks interpret a conversation led by both artists and a computer-generated conversational bot. Somewhat humoristic dialog conceals the limitation of the machine learning and unveils a play of tension and feedback between uncanny pairs, distant yet intimate, epic yet banal, human yet inhuman. Freely inspired by both aesthetics of contemporary entertainment industry and the ones of lo-fi mise en scene.
The idea of an unmade film is to be imagined by the audience, with disparate temporalities building the performance. Compelled by colonised genre of images, which are defined as fiction in our current state, Doppleganger III is an attempt to be uncreative and to redefine, so to act again.
